Adaptations for Tropical Rain Forest

Concept Explanation

Adaptations for Tropical Rain Forest

Adaptations : Changes in the structure or behavior of an organism that allow it to survive in a particular habitat are called adaptations.

Organisms adapt to their habitat by the following means:

  • 1. Changes in body.
  • 2. Changes in behavior.
  • 3. Changes in location.
  • Adaptations for Tropical Forest (Rain Forest)

    Plants :

  • 1.  Leaves of tropical rain - forest tress have specialized tips, called drip tips, drip tips enable raindrops to run off quickly
  • 2.  Due to the dense vegetation of rain - forest, very little light is able to reach the forest floor.
  • Animals :

  • 1.  There is huge variety of animals found in rain forest. Therefore the competition for food is very high
  • 2.  The sloth exhibits camouflage the ability  of certain animals to blend with the surrounding making them difficult to spot is called camouflage.
  • The Tropical Rainforest:  The tropical region lies near both the sides of equator line on the earth. These regions are hot but get plenty of rainfall. Therefore, this region is humid.

  • Even in coldest month, the temperature is generally higher than about 15°C. During hot summers, the temperature may cross 40°C.
  • Days and nights are almost equal in length throughout year.
  • In India, tropical rainforests are found in Western Ghats and Assam. Other countries of the world like South, East, Asia, Central America, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brazil, Republic of Congo, Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria and Central Africa also have tropical rainforest.
  • The major type of animals living in the rainforest are monkeys, apes, gorillas, tigers, elephants, leopards, lizards, snakes, birds and insects.
  • Since, there are large numbers of animals found in these regions. So, the animals are adapted in such a way that they eat different kinds of food and live in different kinds of places to overcome competition for food and shelter respectively.
